#1 Franz Ferdinand- Franz Ferdinand (2004)

The self titled album by the Scottish indie-rockers always jumps out at me, when I’m thinking about defining music of my generation. 3.6million copies of the album were sold overall, with the band winning 2 Brit Awards, a Breakthrough MTV award, NME Best Album, an Ivor Novello award and the prestigious Mercury Music Prize, all as a result of this album, featuring such songs as The Dark Of The Matinee, This Fire, Tell Her Tonight and the mega-hit Take Me Out.

The album sparked the beginning of a successful career for the 4 members, Alex Kapranos (Lead Vocals and Guitar), Bob Hardy (Bass), Nick McCarthy (Rhythm Guitar, Keyboard, Backing Vocals) and Paul Thompson (Drums/Percussion, Backing Vocals), who have since gone on to release 2 further full length albums. ‘You Could Have It So Much Better’ was released in 2005, with ‘Tonight: Franz Ferdinand’ being released in 2007. A fourth full-length studio album is currently in progress, however, Kapranos is refusing to do any sort of diary in the lead up to it, stating it as a mistake made on the production of the last album. The time it has taken them to already begin recording sets it in good stead they won’t rush it like they did on the second album- this well earned break could indicate a return to form.

The self-titled album debuted at 3rd in the UK charts, but struggled across the pond, in America, eventually reaching 32nd on the Billboard 200. Despite it’s apparent lack of chart success, it’s award show it’s prowess- it may not top the charts like the pop of today, but it’s bouncy, fun nature (that led them to receiving the award for Best Live Band off NME in 2006) showed it’s quality among the public and among musicians, with the legendary performance on Jools Holland coming to mind.

I have been to many gigs in my time, ranging from the folk tunes of Frank Turner, to the hardcore punk of The Bronx, and the metal of Avenged Sevenfold, but seeing Franz Ferdinand, on the 17 October 2009 will always be alive in memory (the fact I remember the exact date I think is hard evidence for this). Luckily, playing more of the first and third albums, they owned the stage. With Music Go Music warming up the stage, they took it by storm, with the show culminating as Alex Kapranos jumped into the crowd for during This Fire (so close to me!!) leading to the crowd collapsing, and the show being stopped, as Kapranos was dragged out the crowd, with no tie and a broken guitar.

A true classic, in every sense of the word, that has changed my life.

This is the beginning of a series; check back every week to see what’s next.

#1 Franz Ferdinand- Franz Ferdinand

Next week- #2 ???

Welcome back to SCENE once again! We’ve got some very exciting changes, making it now easier than ever for you to get involved and get your voice heard by the masses. Whether you’re interested in collecting the most SCENE points (and earning prizes as you do!), writing articles for us, or simply getting involved in discussion – it’s now easier than ever to get involved with the fast-growing magazine.

Create an Account

For the eagle-eyed readers, you’ll have noticed that you now have the ability to register an account. Once you’ve registered an account, you will be able to start collecting SCENE Points, which can in turn be exchanged for gifts, prizes and cash. An account also gives you the ability to begin writing and submitting articles to our team of editors. What are you waiting for? Register an account today!

Submitting Articles

As noted above, we now accept article submissions from YOU. Yes, it now really is that easy to get your opinion out there. Whether you’re interested in developing journalistic skill, writing ability, casual writing or if you’d like to join the team – this is now the best way for us to recognise your ability. If we like your articles, we may even offer you a position on our regular writing team! Not only that, but if your article is published to the website, you’ll receive a hefty sum of SCENE points as a thank you. Wonderful, no?!

Obviously, we’d like articles that are submitted to be up to a certain standard – we have a reputation to uphold, you know!

Please aim to write around 550-700 words. You can go over this (and under…), but we tend to find 700 is a bit of a magic number when it comes to keeping your attention. and that anything below 500 tends to be a bit too brief for our liking!

Try to maintain the style of writing which is presented by our regular writers! Be humorous, be critical, but be nice!

Try to keep an objective viewpoint where possible, obviously if you’re submitting a review – slate it if it’s rubbish, praise it if it’s brilliant!

With reviews, remember to let us know the Pros, Cons and star rating you’d like to give it!

Other than that, enjoy your freedom! But don’t abuse it, otherwise your account will be banned.

SCENE Points

SCENE Points are a brand new initiative we offer to encourage members to be active and get involved. Points can be earned for various reasons, whether you’re just visiting the website, commenting on a post or simply have just helped us in some way or another. AND WHAT DO POINTS MEAN? “POINTS MEAN PRIZES”, I HEAR YOU CRY! And you’re absolutely right! We’re working on a list of gifts and goodies which you can redeem your points against (and for those of you who are partial to a bit of pretty green, you’ll even be able to redeem it as cash for a little extra).

“How do I earn these points?”

After changing the face of pop-punk with the release of, ‘From Under The Cork Tree,’ in 2005, Fall Out Boy shot to fame, and went on to release 2 further albums, winning countless awards and inspiring many a young music lover. RockSound magazine credits them with having influenced bands such as Panic! At The Disco and modern pop-punk bands such as YouMeAtSix and Paramore, and up until the beginning of their ‘indefinite hiatus’ in November 2009 they had released 5 full length albums, collaborating with such stars as (take a breath); Elvis Costello, Pharrell, Brendon Urie, Gabe Saporta, Travis McCoy, Debbie Harry, Jay Z, Ryan Ross and Chad Gilbert, in the process.

So, where are they all now? With the 2 year anniversary of their hiatus on the 2oth, what have they been doing in the two years in which Wikileaks have changed the world, the Arab world has erupted into Revolutions, Sudan has seperated into two, and a biggest earthquake ever recorded happens in Chile? Well…

Patrick Stump

Patrick Stump, the lead singer/Rhythm guitarist, had already had experience producing music, after having helped produce the Cobra Starship album, ‘Viva La Cobra,’ Gym Class Heroes,’ ‘As Cruel as School Children,’ and the Lupe Fiasco song, ‘Little Weapon,’ and despite leading the group out of the Chicago Post-Hardcore/Pop-Punk scene, and taking Pop-Punk into the worlwide mainstream, Stump moved onto creating a whole new type of music.

Stump released his first full length solo venture, ‘Soul Punk,’ on the 18th of October this year, which has been described as.. ‘Electropop, Synthrock, Dance-Punk, R&B, Funk and Power Pop.’ (Thank god for Wikipedia) and has led him to supporting such acts as Panic! At the Disco, Janelle Monae and Bruno Mars on tour. He released his album, Soul Punk, on the 18th of October, 2011.

On the future of Fall Out Boy, Stump is quoted to have said, “I will be very, very surprised if we don’t do another record again,” putting no length of time in which he wants this to happen.

Pete Wentz

Do we want to know where he is now? Good question. No? Let’s move on.

Joe Trohman

Trohman, the guitarist… Nah I’m only joking.

Pete Wentz

The bassist who, “Turned heads when he entered the room, unlike me [Stump]” always stirred up controversy, especially after having a picture of his manhood posted on the internet, with an interest fact on his early life being the crazy fact that he dropped out of a Political Science course at University only a quarter shy of Graduation, to focus on his developing music career.

Anyway, after having been in a band with Tim McIlrath, the now lead singer of Rise Against, and having moved around the Chicago hardcore scene, he joined Fall Out Boy, becoming their main lyricist (Stump the composer).

Nowadays, while owning Clandestine Industries (Fashion), Decaydance Records and being father to his son Bronx Mowgli Wentz, he plays in the ‘Electropop/Experimental’ band Black Cards, with Bebe Rexha, and Spencer Peterson, which is yet to release a full length album.

Joe Trohman (Really!)

Trohman became friends with Wentz while in the same band, Arma Angelus, playing Bass, before they met Stump in a Borders shop, and decided to set up Fall Out Boy.

After a friendship sparked up between him and Scott Ian, from Anthrax, they began writing songs together, with influences such as Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. They, along with Rob Caggiano (Anthrax), Keith Buckley and Josh Newton (Every Time I Die) and Andy Hurley (Fall Out Boy) began the writing of a riff heavy, Classic Rock style metal album, under the name of The Damned Things. They released Ironiclast, their first full length album, in 2010.

Andy Hurley

Hurley, a self-proclaimed Anarcho-Primitivist (he believes that people should live like humans did prior to 10,000 years ago) was the drummer. Prior to Fall Out Boy, he played in Hardcore Punk and Heavy Metal bands, and joined Fall Out Boy after the release of their first mini-album, ‘Evening Out With Your Girlfriend.’

As mentioned, Hurley now plays drums in The Damned Things, as well as owning the record company ‘Fuck City.’

And it seemed to be going so well. Remember when I posted about the new generation of The X-Factor judges, and about how everything seemed to be a bit more professional this year and basically better? Yeah, well that soon went out the window. In the weeks that followed things have descended into a level of such insanity that I worry sometimes it’s actually all happening inside my head. Because none of this can surely be real? Judges have gone ill, contestants have been axed, been accused of bullying and the shows reputation sort of lays in tatters. But at the same time, it’s amazing. Because the show is now an amazing example of car crash telly, you sort of want to watch it with your hands over your eyes, unless you’re Cheryl Cole, in which case I imagine you’re loving it than the show’s gone to pot since you left.

So, for anyone who’s been in a coma for the past few weeks. Here are 10 things you should know about whats been happening in the land of The X-Factor.

01 Frankie Cocozza axed

So walking, talking STD Frankie Cocozza was axed this week for breaking a ‘golden rule’. He took drugs basically. Which is odd, because I’m certain Kelly’s on god know how many substances half the time. Though personally I think it’s because Gary Barlow’s name will soon have to be tattooed on his bum. Frankie was a bit awful it has to be said, and won’t be missed by a great deal, though I personally rather enjoyed looking at his hair, just to see if a small woodland creature would pop up.

02 The return of 2 Shoes (hopefully)

With Cocozza gone, we were left with the possibility of only two acts in the final, and The X-Factor not being a show that wants to lose revenue, someone had to be brought back. And now we have one of the four acts axed in the first week by the judges (2 Shoes, Amelia, James, Jonjo) heading back into the competition on Saturday. It will be Amelia of course, but I’m holding out for 2 Shoes. Blonde Shoe can give birth to Little Shoe on-stage during the final and name it Kelisa or Garlouis or something.

03 Kelly was sick *cough, cough*

Kelly missed the week 4 live shows because of illness. During the final showdown she was on the phone to give her vote of elimination, and effectively gave the most hilarious performance of someone phoning into the office sick so they could go shopping. You know fully well she was on her way to Beyonce’s Halloween party. She coughed a bit too, tragically Dermot did not follow this with ‘boo, you whore’. Oh Dermot.

04 Alexandra Burke.com

With Kelly ‘sick’, series 5 winner Alexandra Burke stepped in to replace her for the night, and was brilliant yet awful at it at the same time. The highlight was that she finished one of her comments with dot.com, and therefore tainted any of the credibility of anything else she said. She spoke some sense in the middle of it but it was all lost after this bit.

05 Eliminations

Nothing too surprising really, Nu-Vibe were a bit awful, Sami was good but badly mentored by Louis and no one knew who Sophie was to really care. It was last Saturday’s events that really changed things, as The Risk were one of the acts predicted to do very well and probably reach the final. Much more tragically we also Johnny Robinson, whom we never got to see in full-drag.

06 Misha B

I love Misha B. On the one hand because she’s technically the best contestant of the lot, the only one who already performs like an actual popstar and the only who has been consistent throughout. But also because of what happened in week 3, when Tulisa and Louis accused her of basically bullying some of their acts. This has ruined her chances of winning of course, but gives me the time to imagine all the hilarious things she does and says backstage. I imagine Janet lives in utter fear of her.

07 Janet refusing to go away

Speaking of Janet, still there. Despite being awful. Even she knows she’s awful. You can see it in her poor, little crushed face.

08 Kitty and the mental things that happen in her head

I love Kitty Brucknell’s performances, for they are a truly disturbing imagery into what happens inside her brain. The public hate her of course, as she’s mental and deluded and basically Katie Waissel with more talent. But she spins herself upside down, can’t dance and gives awesome performances.

09 The ever changing faces of The Groups

One of the indistinguishable members of The Risk left, and was then replaced by indistinguishable member of eliminated boyband Nu-Vibe. The Risk were then eliminated two weeks later. The new member had also been rejected as a soloist. Poor boy was clearly cursed. Dilemma also crossed paths with girlgroup Rhythmix too, and their name was shared with a charity and they now go by the name of Little Mix. Which is an even worse name. Despite being a girlgroup, they’re still here too, which shows more than anything how upside down this series is.

10 Marcus & Craig

You know I can’t really say anything about Marcus without it sounding like I’m madly in love with him, on perhaps a somewhat insane level. Because I’m not. Well, maybe just a little. Marcus has been the most noticeable contestant to really improve week on week, in the same manor that Alexandra Burke did back in 2008, and now think the only act that really stands in his way is Craig, whom I don’t obsessively love. For good reason, the boy is borefest of a contestant and would no doubt go down the same path as Brookstein/Jackson/McElderry.

That’s your lot. And I’ve not even mentioned the fact that Kelly and Tulisa now sort of hate each other and Louis is now somehow the judge speaking the most sense. And most of this stuff will be irrelevant next week anyway, when Janet will probably be pregnant with Frankie’s baby and Misha will have murdered Tulisa live on-stage.

The X Factor 2011′s live shows have finally started, with a whopping 16 contestants taking to the stage and singing some of our favourites from the UK and the USA.

With all of the acts reeling from the revelation of the big twist, where one act from each category will be sent home by their own mentor, their focus this week was on appealing to them, rather than the audience at home, and after seeing the performances, it’s apparent that some of the judges have it easier than the others. Here is a runthrough of what I think of last night’s performances:

01 Amelia Lily (Girls mentored by Kelly) – Billy Jean
Amelia was first up, with a high energy performance of this Michael Jackson classic. There’s no doubt that she can sing at all. I found her to be a bit of a cut-price Christina before her re-style (which by X Factor standards is quite amazing), but now that she has her own unique look, she can do better. She’s definitely safe this week, surely!

o2 Johnny Robinson (Over 25s mentored by Louis) – Believe
Next was drag act Johnny, singing every gay’s favourite Believe, while looking ready to be put in the oven on gas mark three for about two and a half hours. There was nothing wrong with the performance, although it was a bit shaky. Is Louis going to turn Johnny into this year’s freak show, though?

03 Rhythmix (Groups mentored by Tulisa) – Superbass
They sounded really good, but looked a bit of a state. The fact that the contestants are tackling songs like this is definitely a testament to how the new judges have given the show a new lease of life, though. I do hope they break the curse of the girlband and do well. They’re definitely the best The X Factor’s seen for years.

04 Frankie Cocozza (Boys mentored by Gary) – The A Team
Frankie really annoys me. He’s quite average and is only there for his qualities as a “lad”. I doubt a girl who flashed her left tit with the names of even of her conquests tattooed on it would be stood there. The performance was OK enough, but nothing special.

05 Sophie Habibis (Girls mentored by Kelly) – Teenage Dream
Sophie, who claims to work 9-5 in a pub, sang a unique arrangement of this song while sat on a piano. It was alright enough, but compared to the other girls, was it enough to stand out? Personally, I would say yes, but the fact the judges said she “came from nowhere” is concerning for her.

06 Jonjo Kerr (Over 25s mentored by Louis) – You Really Got Me
Oh dear. It just fell a bit flat, really. There was nothing wrong with it, but it’s the type of thing we see on the first live show every year and just ends up being a bit average. I feel more intrigued as to what Louis’ choice of song would have been. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be seeing Jonjo next week, considering each of Louis’ other acts bring something unique to the competition.

07 2 Shoes (Groups mentored by Tulisa) – Something Kinda Ooh
This wasn’t very good musically and the whole performance was probably overshadowed by the dark haired ‘shoe’ having her lipstick run all over her face making her look like she has some sort of awful skin condition. They have the personality and can sing, but they might be in danger.

08 James Michael (Boys mentored by Gary) – Ticket to Ride
The first of this year’s gaggle of Scousers, James (whose sob story is that his mother doesn’t pay her rent) did a bit of a dull performance of Ticket to Ride, with an ever changing pronunciation of the word “care” which was quite amusing. I did like the background of the house on the screen though.

09 Misha B (Girls mentored by Kelly) – Rolling in the Deep
I may be biased, because I was present for Misha’s audition in Manchester on that glorious June Sunday morning, but isn’t she great? I think her rapping leaves a lot to be desired, because her lyrics don’t really go further than “Misha, five foot one” but her singing is amazing. It’d be a shame and a travesty if she went home. But I’m quite sure that she’s safe and might even win.

10 Nu Vibe (Groups mentored by Tulisa) – Beautiful People
Oh dear. They definitely lost the battle of the boy bands this week. Again, the fact they sang such a current song is a testament to the freshening up of the show and possibly Tulisa’s mentoring. The highlight of their time on stage was the one who flashed his abs telling Dermott in the most unsexy northern accent imaginable that it was “something for the ladies”. I hope Tulisa gets rid of them.

11 Marcus Collins (Boys mentored by Gary) – Mo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooves Like Jagger
He sounded a bit like The Laughing Cow. It was a good enough performance, but it was one of those where it makes you realise how talented the person who actually sings the song really is. He’s probably safe though.

12 Sami Brookes (Over 25s mentored by Louis) – Free
I fell in love with Sami and her ever increasing in volume voice after her first audition where she nearly broke her microphone whilst belting One Moment in Time so loudly. This performance was a bit club singer-ish and old fashioned though. Which is a shame.

13 The Risk (Groups mentored by Tulisa) – She Said
Definitely the better of the two boy bands, they’ve done really well considering they were put together from three solo artists who were a band, and one from a group who should have been called “The Off-Keys” who auditioned and kept getting through despite being a bit shit. Tulisa’s done well again here and would be mad to get rid of them!

14 Craig Colton (Boys mentored by Gary) – Jar of Hearts
This was amazing! Well done to Craig for coming up with this. I wouldn’t be surprised if this shot up the charts thanks to this performance. Also, if he wore a ginger wig he’d look just like Adele.

15 Kitty Brucknell (Over 25s mentored by Louis) – Who Wants to Live Forever
Styled as a bit of a knock-off Lady Gaga, Kitty did an OK enough performance of this. It’s clear she’s going nowhere and that she’s been cast as this year’s controversial Katie Waissel character. She does have the right idea of how to make people remember her, though.

16 Janet Devlin (Girls mentored by Kelly) – Fix You
She looked really pretty with her makeover, but her voice really does irritate me. I know this sort of thing appeals to a lot of people, but to call her unique is just wrong. Is she unique in the sense that she’s very much the same as Diana, Ellie, Florence and every other female with messy hair and a warm knit who sings with a bit of a London-ish accent? She’s clearly not going anywhere and has a lot of support though.

Overall, the live shows have got off to a good start, and although it originally looked like we had a bit of a crap Final 16, they’ve proven otherwise. The judges all seem to get on as well and are entertaining. Let’s hope it continues for the rest of the series!

Edit: So my psychic powers aren’t quite working! Amelia, Jonjo, 2 Shoes and James were sent home.

The main talking point of the last week, I suppose, is Ed Miliband; Once referred to as ‘Red Ed,’ (and still, strangely, by some), the Labour leader sought to try and persuade both his party, and the electorate that he should become the Prime Minister at the Labour Party Conference, in Liverpool this week. To me, that sounds like a challenge. One that I, personally, would wish to do as best as I can doing, to try and defend those affected by the coalition’s programme of cuts, and the tight economic situation of the moment, where people throw round meaningless billions; everyone being in debt to everyone, as we are told. My first point, involves this guy.

Miliband, on Monday, announced that he would support, “people who don’t hack phones, loot shops, fiddle expenses or earn huge salaries,“ as described here, on the Guardian website. Sounds good, don’t you think? However, let’s look at the breakdown, bearing in mind I am quite keen on the principle of Habeas Corpus…

11 People have been arrested over the Phone Hacking Scandal so far; Neville Thurlbeck, Ian Edmondson, James Weatherup, Terenia Taras, Laura Elston, Andy Coulson, Clive Goodman, Neil Wallis, Rebekah Brooks, Stuart Kutner, and one Anonymous ‘Private Investigator.’

1,700 have been charged with looting; There is evidence that 3,100 people were, arrested, but 1,700 people have been charged (as of the date of that article) with 1,400 still without sentencing.

6 People have been charged for fiddling expenses; David Chaytor, Eric Illsley, Elliot Morley, Jim Devine, Lord Taylor of Warwick, Paul White (Baron Hanningfield.) I will not go into how they have actually been charged, (2 people involved in ‘inciting riots’ via facebook have been sentenced to 4 years in prison, despite the fact that the riots didn’t happen, and Baron Hanningfield has been released from prison after serving a quarter of his nine month sentence, despite claiming illegally for £14,000.)

1% of the country earn what is considered, ‘Huge Salaries.’ Huge Salaries, as explored on this BBC page, are of those who earn £118,027 or more (those who earn £150,000 and trigger the controversial 50p tax rate, take up 0.6% of the country). That is around 620,000 people (372,000 if you only consider those who earn the 50p tax rate.)

Overall, that equals 621,717 people, that Ed Miliband is not targeting. They are those that have looted, hacked, been scandalous and earned too much. That is approximately 1.002% (rounded to 1%) of the country (rounding the population of the country to 62,000,000), therefore signalling that, Ed Miliband is aiming his sharp, educated gaze at 99% of the country. What a smart idea! I understand Ed’s idea of fighting against those who have wronged, but come on.

A few ideas also thrown around at the Labour conference, like a cold, bitter coffee on the lap of a failing government that is still beating them, was that of cutting VAT to 5% for home improvements (to encourage the development of abandoned and derelict housing) along with the famous banker’s bonus tax, which would pay for 100,000 jobs for youths and 25,000 new homes. They sound like good ideas. Hey! I have one!

A few leading economists came out last month, saying that the 50p tax rate doesn’t actually make any money; those who eligible to pay it, just move money abroad to avoid paying tax, to such places as Monaco and Switzerland. This is obviously a problem. However, why don’t we look at the books of the company, rather than those of the person. We see who the company is paying, and how much, and then tax it before it even leaves the vaults. If we had a system in place, which didn’t use tax as the middle man, but actually in the pre-payment process, then there would be no chance that anyone could move their money out of the country before it is taxed, as that has already been done before they have a wiff of it. That way, the rich pay their share of the money, without tax avoidance.

Just an idea.

The deadly foursome from Leicestershire are back from the asylum that awarded them with plaudits and success, but now with kaleidoscopic rhythms and sounds that led to their following in expectancy rather than aspiration of their new album.

But surely there were fears and concerns that these assumptions of ‘Velociraptor’ were not going to be succeeded. After all, all four albums that Kasabian have knocked out to the public have been slightly different and successful in each’s own way, so it was almost as if Serg and his pack were due a bad album?

We’ve seen it before. Those bands that could do no wrong, did wrong. Those bands that appeared unstoppable - were stopped.

Just look at the Arctic Monkeys, whom after two years out came up with a stinker in 2009 with ‘Humbug’, as a different sound led to different reviews – this time of a negative nature. A reaction they were not used to after the successes of their previous two albums. The album that awarded Kings of Leon the fame and fortune they now endure was actually probably their worst album to date. Although ‘Only by the Night’ provided us with their hit singles ‘Use Somebody’ and ‘Sex on Fire’ it didn’t provide us with much else.

The list is endless, as are the criticisms. But those who hunt in packs of 4 like Velociraptors can sense their prey (in this case awards and accolades) and arguably become the best British group of their day. There are no signs of the group’s success dwindling before their hugely anticipated tour this winter, as it could be said that ‘Velociraptor’ is their best to date.

The album seems split with seemingly leftovers from West Ryder with the single ‘Switchblade Smiles’ and ‘Days are Forgotten’ and experimenting with a slower sound and perhaps dabbling with love songs with ‘La Fee Verte’ and‘Goodbye Kiss’. What Velociraptor lacks with pace and heaviness from its predecessor, it makes up for in creative flair, intricacy and style.

It seems everything Kasabian touch nowadays, either turns into gold (or failing that – a Brit Award should suffice!) It seems they can do no wrong, and if you want something that’ll promise to blow your mind, a Kasabian track would be a safe and wise choice. After three successful hit albums, Sergio and Co. have given us something new and fresh that hasn’t been seen since the age of the dinosaur, Velociraptor!

Buy Kasabians latest (and arguably best) album ’Velociraptor’ here

Now, I know Portal isn’t particularly new – but I, being me, never really understood what the game was all about. (@ColAdam once beat me 12-0 on FIFA, so he can vouch for me not being a brilliant gamer…) So if, like me, you’ve never played Portal before – I’d strongly recommend you read on. After all, everybody loves a freebie, even if it’s 4 years old…

Imagine mixing a First Person Shooter with a puzzler, a physics lesson and if Stephen Hawking’s voice box was a (slightly annoying) woman, and there you go – you’ve got Portal. I’ve been playing for about 2 hours and I’m already fairly addicted. Portal throws players into the basement of abandoned ‘Aperture Science’, where they must solve puzzles with a pair of portal guns, the occasional box-type thing, and needy turret-guns who will quite happily shoot you dead, whilst eerily asking if you’re still there. It’s odd, to say the least.

The game is fairly acclaimed though – after a hugely successful release in 2007 – Valve went on to dominate the E3 awards last year for Portal 2, receiving awards for ‘Best PC Game’, ‘Best Playstation 3 Game’, and ‘Best XBox 360 Game’, so it must be pretty good, right? If you’re still not convinced, check out the trailer below:

 allowScriptAccess=”always” width=”425″ height=”355″>

So go on, put down your pens and bastard Maths homework – and play the educational FPS at once. Head over to Steam and download your free copy for your PC/Mac, you’ve only got until Tuesday, September 20th though… Now you’re thinking with Portals.

N.B: An hour later and I feel like I could hurl for England. If you feel sick, take a break – nobody wants their lunch in their keyboard.

The month is now September, and is now the time when over-excitable kids start to think “Oi Oi, Next Up is Christmas!!!” – of course, if you’re a bit like me, and into your footy (the on-screen types, I do have asthma, thankyou), you might just be starting to feel like it’s time for a new addition to the FIFA series.
And if you’re not, then EA think you should be, as they’ve released a demo just to toy with your already unstable emotions. Yes, the demo has recently been made available on the XBox 360 ahead of the game’s release (across all platforms) on 30th September (UK Version).

Now, I’ll let you come to your own conclusions on the demo, as I’m sure all of you invariably will, but at the end of the day a demo is just that. I’m sure many of you will go ahead and buy FIFA 12 when it’s released simply as a matter of principle rather than a logical and informed buy. A simple philosophy is uniquely applied to the purchasing of the latest FIFA model that goes along the line of “I’m a guy, I need this for my man flu, and my mates, and myself, and FIFA, and just generally in life“

Anyway, moving on an my global sources (not really) have informed me that the tracklisting below could very well turn out to be the final playlist. Again, I’ll let you come to your own conclusions but my personal and subjective music taste tells me that this is a class playlist - The Vaccines, Glasvegas, Chase & Status, Foster the People, Digitalism, Kasabian, Spank Rock, The Naked & Famous, The Strokes; these are some of my favourite acts. Do remeber that this is only a speculation, so don’t expect it to be 100% truth, who would you like to see on the FIFA playlist? Feel Free To Comment Below.

Before gaining notoriety amongst folk and rock fans alike with the release of, ‘Sleep Is For The Week,’ in 2007, and then the more popular release of, ‘Love, Ire and Song,’ in 2008, Frank Turner enjoyed his early (partially successful) music career as the vocalist in Hardcore Punk/Post Hardcore band Million Dead, winning praise from figures such as the late legend, John Peel, and current BBC Radio 2 DJ Steve Lamacq; and it seems that Turner wishes to return to his punk roots.

He announced to some surprise, in a backstage interview at Reading Festival for the NME, his plans to form a new Hardcore band; similar to Million Dead in style. Declaring on his blog later, Turner announced that he had a complete line up. It is however, still unnamed. Despite being a new venture, expect something similar to this;

Although Turner hastens to add however, that this band is a side project, and is fully focused on his solo career.
